How to Export Your Stems for Professional Mixing

The most common mistake artists make before sending their project: exporting with effects on the master bus. We explain step by step how to prepare your 24-bit WAV stems so the engineer can get the maximum potential out of your song.

Before hiring an online mixing service, the most important thing is to properly prepare your files. A poorly exported stem can ruin the engineer's work, no matter how good their plugins are.

Step 1 — Bypass everything on your Master channel: reverbs, compressors, limiters, EQs. Export clean. The mixing engineer will apply their own processing chain.

Step 2 — WAV format, 24-bit, 44.1 kHz: never export as MP3. Lossy compression destroys the transients the engineer needs to work with.

Step 3 — All stems starting from 0:00: even if a track only comes in at the second verse, it must start from the beginning. This keeps everything in perfect sync when importing.

Step 4 — Name your stems clearly: use names like "lead_vocal", "808_bass", "kick", "synth_melody". Avoid names like "track01" or "audio3".

Step 5 — Compress everything into a .ZIP and share via WeTransfer or Google Drive. Never via WhatsApp or email, which automatically compress audio.

Mixing is the process where the engineer works with all the stems separately: adjusting volumes, applying EQ to each track, placing elements in the stereo field with reverbs and delays, and building the tonal balance of the song.

Mastering is the final step before distribution. The engineer receives the stereo mix and processes it so it sounds competitive on all playback systems: headphones, speakers, cars, and platforms like Spotify or Apple Music.

When do you need mixing? When you have all instruments and vocals recorded separately (stems). If your song was produced in a DAW like Ableton, FL Studio or Logic, you always need mixing.

When do you only need mastering? When you already have a high-quality mix and just need to prepare the audio for distribution. The standard is -14 LUFS integrated for Spotify and -16 LUFS for Apple Music.

The vocal is the most important element of any urban track. Before recording, there are things you must do and things you should definitely avoid. This guide covers everything from warm-up to correct monitoring to capture the best take.

Hydration before recording: avoid dairy, alcohol and very cold drinks for 2 hours before recording. Drink room temperature water. A hydrated vocal has more dynamic range and less sibilance noise.

Input level: set your interface so peaks don't exceed -6 dBFS. The ideal recording target is between -18 dBFS and -12 dBFS. Recording too loud introduces distortion that can't be corrected in the mix.

Pop filter and distance: place the pop filter about 5 cm from the microphone and sing at 15-20 cm distance. Too close causes proximity effect (excess bass); too far loses presence and picks up more room noise.

Monitoring: use closed-back headphones to hear the beat while recording. Never use open speakers as the sound bleeds into the microphone and ruins the take.
